Conflicts at the age of Exploration.

Cartier was a French explorer who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Law. River; which he named “the country of Canada”, after the Iroquois names for two big settlements he saw.
Cabot was an Italian Navigator and explorer in North America. He arrived to England in mid 1498 and was sent to the coast of North America.
Cabeza de Vaca was born in Spain in 1492. In the 16th century his name appeared as “ alvar nuñez cabeza de vaca” it really means “head of cow”, the last name was added to his mother´s family when his ancestor Martin Alanja aided a Christian army attacking moors and cow´s. In the early 1527 he departed from Spain as a part of a royal expedition to North America. He was one of the chief offices of the Narvaez expedition. The current send them into the gulf and the five rafts were separated by hurricane. He explored what is now the U.s ( Texas, N.M states). He lived in conditions of poverty and in slavery. He was naked the whole time ever since he sacrificed his clothes to make the boats.
Marco Polo was a merchant from the Venetian republic, wrote a book that has sold 2 million copies, which introduced Europeans to central Asia and China. He learned about trading with his father and uncle, Niccolo and Maffeo. Traveled through Asia and met Kiblah Khan. In 1269 they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the 1st time. He became a wealthy merchant, married and had 3 children. Died in 1324 and was buried in San Lorenzo.
Ponce de León
Juan Ponce de León was born in the village of Santervas de Campos in the northern part of what is now the Spanish province of Valladolid. Ponce de León became an experienced soldier fighting in the Spanish campaigns that defeated the moors in Granada and completed the re-conquest of Spain in 1492.

The Viking expancion:the discovery of America was done accidentally by Bjarni Herjofsson . Bjarni believed that his father went with Erick the Red to Greenland.So he took his crew and started to travel to find him.But during the travel a storm blows Bjarni out of course. Another problem was that no one knew Greenland and they started a search for it and at that's how he was in America.
Another exploration started with Leif Ericsoon who stablished Vinland in New Found Land , Labrador ,Canada. They found grapes and salmon.The climate was mild and there was little frost. Ater the trip Leif become a Christian.
The Vikings were sea faring men intent on setting their mark on their neighbors by fire and sword. "From the the land of ice and giants, they swept across Europe like a forest fire , raping , pillaging and destroying everything in their path".
In a blood thirsty age they were more blood thristy than most , but consider that the people that did the writting were those that were between the Vikings and their silver.

The Golden Hind, was an english galleon best known for its circunavigation between 1577 and 1580. Capitined by Sir Drake, it was originally known as the Pelican but later was Golden Hind to compliment his patron, sir Christopher Hatoon whose armorial crest was a golden hind. 1. La niña, 2. la Pinta and 3. La Santa Maria, were the 3 caravels that Colombus used for the trip to America 1. the Real name is Santa Clara, was colombus' favorite, and carried 24 people, left Palos on August 3 1492. 2. It was the fastest one, smaller than the Santa Maria. 3. the largest ship, it crossed the Atlantic and it can carry 40 men and it was slower.

When the Portuguese explorers crossed the equator in 1471 Polaris was no longer visible and in 1484 king John II of Portugal appointed a mathematical commission to examine the problem of using the sun to determinelatitude at sea. In 1537 the great Portuguese mathematician Pedro Nuñes published an important study on the errors of the plain chart.
EARLY NAVIGATION:

LA NIÑA & LA PINTA

On January 16 of 1493 la Pinta and the Niña began their trip back to Spain. Because of all the wind and because of the bad climate the Niña goes to Lisbon because the ocean pulled them to Lisbon. Then the Pinta could go to Baiona on March 1.In the 3rd day of August of 1492 the Pinta and the Niña and the Santa Maria went out form Palos with the intention to get to the Indies. When they were in the Canarias Island Colombus and the brothers Pinzon got into the ship and left. Then later, after 36 days of navigation , Rodrigo de Tirana yelled TIERRA in the morning of October 12, a new world was discovered.

How did the Vikings arrive to America?

A Viking (Bjarni Herjolfsson) ¨discovered¨ America when his ship was blown off course, in 985. In 1,001 Leif Ericsson was the first to land in America and they spent the winter, with his people, in Newfoundland and settled in L´Anse aux Meadows but they had many flights with Native American people so they gave up their settlement. Vikings also sailed into the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. They were brave sailors. They also sailed to Greenland and Iceland.

Ships description:

They were steady and fast. Vikings were the best boats engineers. There were two types of Viking ships: ¨long ship¨ which was used for warfare. The other was ¨Knarr¨ which was a cargo ship. Both were decorated with animals and made of oak or pine.

Long ships:

Typically with dragon heads. They also carried a removable mast which is about half the size of the boat. They could get up to six knots of speed. They carried twelve to fifteen places for oarsmen in case there was no wind. For long trips they have a deck. It usually carried a little boat called after-boat. Most of the boat was ensambled with ropes because there were no nails. The Vikings slept in a wool sleep-bag under the deck.

Knarr:

They were cargo boats. It was made to carry from 10 to 100 people and carried objects such as timber, cattle, wool and wheat. It was also made of Oak or pine. The mast was removable. Commonly they were about 52 feet long, 16.5 feet wide. They employed the people in the port when they were getting there or going out.

Longboats and Navigation:

The Vikings were great sailors. They could live months in the sea. The most important elements for the navigation were: the ship, the crew and the supplies. They knew their location because of the sun and the stars.

How did they find their way when the sun and stars could not be seen?

They used an instrument called a sunstone. A sunstone was a natural crystal which could refract light, making it possible to see the sun when it´s not visible. They also measured the depth of the water to know where it was shallow.

Chronicle:

There is a chronicle about a man called Floki Vilgerdarson who discovered Iceland by releasing three ravens (birds). The 1^st one flew back home, the 2^nd one refused to fly and the 3^rd one pointed the way to Iceland.

Knowledge:

They had traditions that were passed through many generations. They had a great knowledge of geography. Also, a great sea knowledge, including the knowledge of different types of seabirds, seaweed and other flotsam, and ancestral knowledge.

Viking Ships

They had a dragon head from the front and back. Viking ships were able to navigate rivers and shallow water where the others couldn’t trade.

There were 2 types of ships:

The knarr were built for Atlantic voyages. They were cargo ships that could carry up to 24 tons.

Longships were a type of small ships similar to the Knarr. They were used for human transport and to carry goods.

Vikings in America

Leif Eriksson voyaged from Greenland for lands to the west. Then he landed on Vinland. Then they landed in a place called L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland and settled there.

Portuguese Explorers History

The Golden Age of Discovery for Portugal was in the late 1400s and 1500s. It started with Henry the Navigator who was motivated to break the Moorish hold on the Africa and Asia trade routes. The Renaissance and Elizabethan age of Exploration were at first dominated by Portuguese Explorers. The Renaissance saw success of Portuguese explorers in getting monopolies on the spice trade and their expeditions to Japan and to the New Word gave Power to Portugal. The New discoveries made by Portuguese explorers brought gold and silver and spices.

PRINCE HENRY THE NAVIGATOR

The man responsible for Portugals age of exploration was Prince Henry the Navigator. Henry was born in 1394 and in 1419, his father made him governor of Portugals Southermmost Coast. From 1419 until his death in 1460, Prince Henry sent expedition after expedition down the West Coast of Africa .

JOAO FERNANDEZ

It is possible that in 1500 he reached the land which we know as Greenland, and called it Terra do Lavrador. The name later

migrated South to what is now called Labrador.

VASCO DA GAMA

He followed Bartolomeu Dias route to the ape of Good Hope in 1497 to 1498 and continued sailing into unknown waters along the Eastern Coast of the African continent. In 1502, Da Gama returned with 14 heavily armed ships and managed to defeat the Arab fleet.

THE CORTE-REALs

Gaspar Corte-Real was given a Royal Charter in 1500 and also made a Voyage that year in which he reached Terraverde. This was probably Newfoundland, but some historians have Corte-Real sailing first to Greenland and then South along the Labrador Coast to Newfoundland.

Gaspar sailed to Terraverde again in 1501, with three caravels. He captured about 60 native people as slaves. In the return only the captives reached Portugal. The others drowned with Gaspar. Gaspars brother, Miguel Corte-Real, went to look for him in 1502 but also failed to return.

At the time of the armada launch Spain was the most powerful nation in the world. The country controlled all the known Americas exept Brazil, Portugal, a greater part of Italy and the Low Countries seventeen separate provinces. PhillipII had been also the titular king of England because of his marriage to Elizabeth I 's sister, Mary I. This made for extremely tense relations between the nations because of the differences in religion. Spain was a Catholic nation, England was a newly reformed Protestant one. The war had been stirred by Elizabeth's greatest weapon, Sir Francis Drake. Drake was a heady pirate, infamous for

Viking ships

There were 2 distinct classes of Vikings ships: the long ship and the knar.The longship, intented for warfare and exploration, was designed for speed with oars to complement the sail. The longship had a long and narrow hull to facilitate troop landings in shallow water. The Knar was a delicate merchant vessel designed to carry cargo. It was designed with a bendre hull, deeper draft and limited number of oars.

Explorations and North America:

1. The Vikings sailed most of the North Atlantic, reachig on the south to North Africa and east to Russia, Constantinople and the Middle East, as looters, traders, colonists and mercenaries.

2.Vikings under Leif Eriksson, heir to Erick the Red, reached Noth America and set up a settlement in present-day L anse aux meadows, New foundland and Labrador, Canada.

Causes of Exploration:

1. One common theory says that the Norse population had out grown agricultural potential of their Scandinavian homeland.

2.Another explanation is that the Vikings exploited a moment of weakness in the surrounding regions.

3.The decline in the profitability of old trade routes could also have played a role. Trade between Western Europe and the rest of Eurasia suffered a severe blow when the Roman Empire fell in the 5th century.

Vikings in North America:

1: Lanse aux meadows is the only authentical Viking site in North America. It was established 1000 years ago by the explorer Leif Erikson during his adventures in Eastern North America-500 years before Columbus exploits in the ¨New World¨. The site waas rediscovered by Helge Ingstand and his wife Anne Stine in 1960.

2.Leif Erikson set out from Greenland and reached Baffin island which he named Hellu land or Land of Stone. From there he sailed to Labrador and into the Gulf of St.Lawrence, wich he named Vinland. He established a settlement at Lanse aux meadows, where he collected timber and other riches of the land and returned to his home in Greenland. Others who conduct their own exploratio included his brother Thorvald and his sister Freydis. Several clues from the story, like references to wild grapes, hard woods, butternuts led archaeologists to speculate that Leifs camp was some where between New England and New Foundland.

For transportation Inuits use kayaks, umiaks, snowshoes and dogsleds.
The kayak is a boat that can carry only one person. It is quiet for hunting. It is small and covered in seal skins. Around the edge it was slightly raised so the passenger could fasten his coat to the rim. This way the man and the boat could be one water proof unit. The kayak’s paddle is a long stick which has a paddle on each side.
The umiak is a larger and more open boat. It is covered with animal skins. It was made to carry large loads: an entire family or a two-ton load of blubber. The normal length of a amok was 35-40 feet. But for its size it was quite light, light enough for two men to carry.
The best known transportation was the komatik or dogsled. The komatik has a light but sturdy frame on runners with reins. The reins are hitched up to six or so huskies.
Snowshoes are racket-shaped platforms which have leather straps across the frame which tie on your feet.

The houses of the Hupa culture where made of cedar or red wood. This culture is very noticed because of the baskets that the women produced.

They lived in the Hoopa valley in California.

The Hupa culture depended on food of the mountains, salmon of the rivers, and vegetables for farming.

In this culture the men go to hunt animals for food and skins and the women stay in the buildings doing baskets or some classes of arts.

They traded withe the Yurok food, arts and skins.

They Were farmers, the area was very humid

The area had a problem with swamps, there were

a lot of swamps so they had problems. The remains of the dead

ones were very important, they built mounds on top of them , they were like piles of dirt

and they placed the body inside and put more dirt on top of it so the rain

and currents wouldn't get it and wash it away. they dissappeared from time.

History: The Inuit began from western Alaska around 1000 AD. Their total population was about 150,000 people. People believe that their larger weapons and other technologies helped them for advantage. The changing climate forced them to migrate to the south.
Language: The Inuit speak Inuit languages or dialects. Sometimes its called Inuktitut. Inuktitut is spoken in Nunavut.

The best know episode in Cherokee history was the worst: THE TRAIL OF TEARS the forced relocation of the Cherokee indianas from their ancestral home in the Southeast to Oklahoma. THE ANASAZI:

The anasazis was one of the first tribes to farm maize (in the SW), they lived areound 1500BC and they lived in what today is Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.
With the time the Anasazi began to use irrigation to increase food production, they became basket makers and they became potter makers as well. They lived in pit houses made of clay called adobe they called their houses PUEBLOS, these were made on top of each other and had several rooms so it could house around 1,000 people, they had to use ladders to enter therir houses, they provide good defence to enemy attacks. They also boilt KIVAS (underground ceremonial chambers) at the center of each community. After AD 1300 scholars belive that they left their pueblos because of enemy tribes. The name "Anasazi" means "ancient people."

The Navajos

Is the largest tribe of american indians. them ancestors lived in Alaska and Canada, then they traveled to the united states (SW). They met the pueblo indians and learned from them many things like how to plant, corns, etc. Also they learned how to weave and make art. They live in homes called hogans. They stealed many things from the spanish, like horses for traveling and ship for wool.

Their native language is Diné. Currently they live in Arizona. Also, they were semi-nomadic.They have a lot of spiritual ceremonies to restore armony and health like "The Baby First laugh Ceremony".

Hopewell tribe

The Hopewells lived in Ohio, Missisippi,and lower Missouri rivers and valleys.
They were farmers and they grew a variety of crops, including sunflower, squash, goosefoot, maygrass, and other plants with oily or starchy seeds. They also gathered wild plants, hunted for deer and other large and small game, fished and traded .People think that they traded with the Aztecs.
The place where they lived was humid and one problem was that when it rains a lot it got flooded . The dead bodies were too important for them .So when some people died they made like a mt. and in the top they buried the people so the water wouldn't take away the dead bodies.They got a lot of wood like a very good resource, they also obtained raw materials.
Hopewell people lived in small villages, or hamlets.

History: The cherokees believe they had always lived in Western North Carolina.There are many tools that have helped to discover that they have been living there for about 11,000 yrs. ago.During this time;many people developed settled towns, sophisticated politics and religion, had agriculture, stunning pottery, and tremendously effective archery.Cherokee became a tremendous empire. After the english conquer it became a small territory and its how we know it now a days.

Language:the language the Cherokees speak is the Tsalagi(is an Iroquoian language ).

The Cherokees.

The Cherokees lived in the southern Appalachian Mountains, present-day western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia and Alabama, southwest Virginia, and the Cumberland Basin of Tennessee, Kentucky, and northern Alabama. Now a day the Cherokee live in eastern Oklahoma. There are also Cherokee in North Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama. The Cherokees speak the Iroquian, thats there language but some other speak other languages. Many people of the Cherokee tribe still live now a day on specific reservations wich they work hard to maintain.Others of the Cherokees have moved across the United States and have become part of the dominant culture. When the its Was the european Contact The Cherokee tribe was there and doin farming.Homes were usually a circular framework interwoven with branches and plastered with mud. The Cherokees The basic things they Planted was corn, beans and squash they were also into hunting and gathering of wild plants.

The system of government was replaced by an elected tribal council, it was like the prime minister. A written constitution modeled after that of the United States was added in 1827. Many people of the Cherokee tribe came into farming with comfortable houses, beautiful cultivated fields .Christian missionaries arrived by invitation, and Sequoia invented an alphabet that gave them a written language and overnight made most of the Cherokee literate thats how the cherokee tribe learned all about language and literature. They published a newspaper, established a court system, and built schools. Anyway the poor Cherokee tribe still lived in simple log cabins, . When gold was discovered on Cherokee land in northern Georgia, miners arrived and Indian removal was suggested. The Indian Removal Act was introduced in Congress in 1829. Forced to abandon most of their property, the Cherokee were marched west without adequate shelter, provisions, or food. As many as 4,000 died.
